Across the lake to Kaoshiung

It is hard to capture the view from my friend's rooftop in Kaoshiung but I want to share the scene across the lake to the city. Nice flat TK!

Hua Hin Fishing Boat

A walk along the beach in Hua Hin each morning during spring break was a welcome change from the sidewalks of Taipei. This boat was anchored near the shore after its nightly fishing run and probably was one of the lights I saw bobbing up and down out on the water the previous evening. When the Gulf of Thailand is calm it sure looks peaceful but when Mother Nature growls ... look out!

Baishawan Fishing Boats

In Baishawan, on the north coast of Taiwan, I found one fishing boat staring back at me. I guess the boat can find its way through the fog without radar if it has eyes?
All those nets tell me there must be some serious fishing going on out there. I wonder what the catch of the day is?

Nets, Anchors in Baishawan

On the north coast of Taiwan are some interesting beach areas, one of which is Baishawan. A walk out to the point revealed "fishing pools" where the fishermen built rock pools that trap the fish in the pool when the tide goes out. There are still those who fish with nets and they need to store them somewhere. With the tide out, this looked like a good spot to dry out the nets and leave the anchors. These items also caught my eye as there was something about them: color, position, background, that called my camera phone out to capture them.

Upon the Missouri in Pearl Harbor

While on a trip to Honolulu in with robotics students we took the students out to Pearl Harbor to give them a bit of a history lesson. The timing was good as the ship was being prepared for the 7 December anniversary and there were a number of veterans there to chat with. I was impressed with the size of the ship and the size of the gun barrels. I could only imagine the sound that goes along with the firing of those big "cannons". Taking the time to visit Pearl Harbor was a good thing for all of us as it helped to put some perspective on the history lessons the students receive in class. You can't learn it all in the classroom.

Taiwan Election is Coming Soon!

Taiwan elections are happening in January of 2012 and the campaigns are heating-up. What better way to get your message out than by motorcycle? This guy was definitely getting some attention in the streets of Tien Mu one day. I appreciated that he did not have a loudspeaker blaring the candidate's political message. The flags, stickers and motorcycle paint job were loud enough!
